SPREAD INTERNATIONAL is working on the following activities:
Using a supply chain model we ensure that all inputs necessary for the proper education development of a child are available. In our hostel facility we take care of orphans, children plied into labor, children of backward class or tribal. Generally, these children are living at homes where the annual income is less than 10,000 rupees or $ 300 a year.
Given the lack of resources and care most of the children coming into our facility are unable to go to school and are malnourished. Within a year our children blossom into health and vibrant individuals that excel in school. We rely on a business model to ensure the effective use of resources and have benchmarked our operations relative to other similar organizations around the world. We are able to provide quality services for only $ 240/child which is half or even quarter of the cost of other entities. We appreciate any contributions to support the children in our facility Online Donation form. A donation of only $ 20/month would be able to change the life of one child.
Problem: The remoteness of some hamlets in rural India prevents millions of children from becoming educated. The problem is that either the government has been unable to setup schools in these communities or the teacher(s) find it too inconvenient to attend school in such localities on a regular basis.
Concept/Location: Spread International is now focusing on providing primary education (grades 1-5) in such communities in the tribal belt of Andhra Pradesh. Tribal communities are not only spatially isolated but also lack the social network to draw resources from mainstream society.
Methodology: Our intervention is flexible by design. For each village, we survey the underlying conditions including the number children by age and resources on the ground. If there is a school present, we provide supporting Activity Based Learning (ABL) and other teaching methods to provide a more enriching experience. We also “encourage” the participation of government teachers to ensure their regular attendance. In localities that do not have government schools, we set up educational centers with the help of the local community. Working on a supply chain premise, we work with the local government educational officer to garner additional resources and influence execution of projects.
Results: Our interactions with the local officials have already borne fruit. In one of our target villages, we are now scheduled to set up a government school. We will monitor its progress to ensure that our children do indeed get educated. Our frugality, transparency and efficiency allow us to educate a child for less than $ 100/yr.
It is a well-known fact that in many villages, students of meager economic means lack basic facilities like electricity. In many cases, parents don't have any education to guide their children in their studies. They also can't afford to send them to any private tuition classes or provide any other additional support. Due to this, many students are not able to get through even 10th class. This failure ratio is discouraging other parents from sending their children to schools. We have opened a few study centers to make sure that this phenomenon does not cause a drop in the enrolment in the schools and to make sure that learning is reinforced.
Basic Facilities in Schools
There are many schools without the basic infrastructural facilities like classrooms, benches and tables, library, science lab, sports equipment and other essential supplies. Due to this many schools are unable to provide quality education. We have been working on providing some schools the resources they need to impart education of high quality
The objective of the Scholarships program is to create a healthy spirit of competition among students studying in different schools located in selected regions. Through this program, the highest rank holders from 7th and 10th grades are selected for awards. Depending on the progress of these rank holders, we will also extend support to their higher education. This program will also encourage the parents to pay more attention to their children's education. The achievements of their peers will also inspire other students. Dramatic results have been achieved through this long-term commitment to students' education.
